Happy {Inter}National Scrapbook Day Hybrid Chicks! One of the things I love about hybrid papercrafts is the ability to combine my new love of digi papers with my old love of stamping. Today I’m going to show you a few examples of how I’ve used printed digi papers just like I’d use “regular” Designer Printed paper on some stamped card projects. And best of all? Our very own Julee Tilman, owner of Verve Stamps, is offering a VERY generous stamp set to one lucky winner who comments on this post!!

I absolutely LOVE incorporating digi papers on my card projects and typically print out several blocks of coordinating digi prints on a single 8.5×11 inch sheet of paper. I’ll cut those papers just like I would regular store-bought paper and use them along with a cardstock base and some stamped images & sentiments plus a few physical embellishments on my card projects. The card above uses digi papers from the Just Breathe paper pack by Kelley Mickus combined with the Flowers of Tomorrow Plain Jane by Verve Stamps. I added some Kraft cardstock, some real stitching, a folded piece of ribbon and a mini library clip (Stampin’ Up) as embellishment.

Here are few more samples combining digi papers and stamped images/sentiments:

On this card, I used the Whisper Paper Pack by Kelley Mickus and the new Because of You stamp set and the Elegant Flower Plain Jane by Verve Stamps. (Sketch is Lauren Meader’s Saturday Sketch #19)Verve’s stamps look beautiful when stamped directly on printed digi papers! I used a Kraft Cardstock base and added some Chocolate Chip cardstock matting to some of the digi paper panels. The stamped flower was cut out with my hobby blade and I added a large vanilla brad to the center. Some chocolate ribbon completed the physical embellishments. The main sentiment panel is popped up on 3-dimensional adhesive for some added depth.

This last card once again uses a Kraft cardstock base. This time I used the Flight of Fancy mini kit included in Elise’s Pieces May Grab Bag. Isn’t that airplane embellishment adorable!?! I cut it out with my hobby knife and popped it up on 3-dimensional adhesive. The stamped sentiment is from Verve’s Beautiful Kindness, attached with some simple staples. And finally, some more chocolate ribbon to finish it off!

Sometimes the best part of giving the perfect gift is packaging it up in the perfect wrapping! Check out this creative take on packaging for a baby gift.

Hi! Jen Tapler here again – I’m back as promised with a closer look at the gift packaging I created for my Custom Baby Gift I shared with you on Wednesday. One of my favorite ways to create gift packaging is to use a hybrid template with papers and embellishments that coordinate with the gift. For this project, I used the same Oh Baby digi kit by Mari Koegelenberg that I used to create the iron-on for my onesie along with the Milk Carton Template Set by Kelleigh Ratzlaff. If you’ve never used a hybrid template before, Kelleigh posted an awesome tutorial a few days ago that gives step-by-step instructions from downloading and opening the files on your computer to printing.

To make the milk carton shown here, follow Kelleigh’s template instructions, print and cut out with a good pair of sharp scissors. Use some type of scoring blade along the scoring lines and fold. Your template will now look like this:

Using double-sided tape on the side flap, assemble the box.

Once the sides of the box are assembled and the bottom flaps have been folded in according to the instructions included with the download, use more double-sided tape on the inside of the top front and back to adhere the top. Gently push the sides in as you pinch the front and back together.

And there you have it! Your milk carton is assembled! Embellish to your liking.

As an added creative touch to my gift, I thought it would be cute to put the onesie inside a cleaned out baby food jar, wrapped with a band of coordinating digi paper and placed inside the milk carton. I felt it just sort of brought the whole thing together!!

To embellish my carton, I chose to first cut out a window in the front of the carton using my rectangle Nestabilities dies in my Big Shot machine (you will want to do this before assembling the carton). I also decided to print and cut out one of the star embellishments in the Oh Baby kit and attach to the front of the carton using 3-dimensional adhesive. For the tag, I stamped the Congrats sentiment from the Practically Perfect stamp set from Verve and cut out with my Trio of Tags Nestabilities dies, also in my Big Shot. I added some ribbon and a button and the carton is done!!

Pigment Ink safe for stamping on fabric – I used Perfect Match Hybrid Ink in True Black from Papertrey Ink.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Pre-wash fabric to remove sizing.

Design your iron-on like you would any other digital project using your photo editing software of choice. (again, I use Photoshop Elements). Tip: if you’re using words, be sure to flip the text layer horizontally (so it’s a mirror image when it prints) otherwise your words will be backwards when ironed on (trust me on this one!!!).

Print. Check in the preference window for iron-on transfers under “paper type” – my printer has that setting. Once you have it printed out, use scissors to trim closely around the edge of your design.

Iron-on according to the instructions included in the Transfer Sheet packaging. Tip: if you have an old onesie or similar fabric to practice on, you might print out a few extras of your design to play around with the heat setting on your iron and the timing a bit before tackling your project – I went through a few onesies before I got things just right. (but it was worth it!!). For more tips on ironing, be sure to check out Jill’s great post about it in the Digichick Forums: Ironing Tips.

I’ve found that contrary to the Transfer Sheet Instructions, I get the best results if I remove the backing while it’s still piping hot, NOT waiting for it to cool. I’m not sure if this is a result of environmental conditions or what, but you might have to play around a bit with that as well.

If you’d like to add a stamped image or sentiment to your project, place your stamp on your acrylic block, ink it up, and center it where you’d like it. Using even, firm pressure, stamp directly onto the fabric as you would paper.

Admire your handiwork!!
