Thanks a Latte Single-Serve Coffee Gift Box

February 18, 2013 | Filed under: Articles and tagged with: box, gift, Paper Garden Projects, Quirky Twerp, silhouette

I have a confession to make. For the first 37 years of my life, I hated coffee. Realistically, it was only 19 years, because for the first 18 I am pretty sure my mother wouldn’t allow me to drink coffee, for the very same reasons I won’t allow my 3-year and 6-year old children to consume it. They have enough energy for four or five children; why I would want to double or triple that energy is beyond me!

But then I received a Keurig coffee maker for Christmas 2011 from my mother-in-law. I used it all the time…to heat water for my herbal teas. And then I started spending a lot of time with some really awesome women, who also happened to be coffee drinkers. They couldn’t believe I didn’t like the stuff, but they hung out with me anyway. Then one night at supper club, one of my friends fixed me a cup of coffee with copious amounts of heavy cream, and I was hooked. I started buying the little K-cups to fit my coffee maker, and a monster was born!

I love finding out that a friend or family member has a Keurig machine, because it makes it super-easy for me to give them a little “happy” (what my friends and I call a little thinking-of-you gift) in a flavor or two they might not already have. I’ve tried packaging these cups in different ways and I think this box by Paper Garden Projects is my favorite.

It’s an excellent gift box on its own, but I love that there is an insert for the inside of the box that holds four K-cups just perfectly!

Supplies I used:

  • Gift Box with K-Cup Holder Cutting File by Paper Garden Projects
  • Graphica Botanica Paper Pack and Add-On by Quirky Twerp
  • Silhouette Cameo
  • Coffee4Two stamp set by The {Stamps} of Life
  • Licorice Ink by Clearsnap and Stephanie Barnard
  • Dry adhesive
  • 3-D foam adhesive
  • glue pen
  • glitter
  • rhinestones
  • flower
  • K-cups

First I printed papers from the Grafica Botanica paper pack and add-on kit.

Then I used the dxf file in the K-Cup Holder Cutting File kit to cut the box bottom, top, and insert. Cathy has included an excellent how-to document with the cutting files that tells you how to make the dxf file the size the designer intended for it to be. I was very excited to find this instruction file, because dxf files have vexed me for a long time! And with something as exact as a box designed to hold a specific product, it needed to be scaled to the correct size!

Of course, you can use one of the other files included in the template to add your digital papers, print out and hand-cut if that is your preference. I tend to go back and forth between using the machine and hand-cutting, and today just felt like a Silhouette kind of day!

Once I had all of my pieces cut out, I folded along all of the score lines. I find it easier to fold everything before I start applying adhesive.

Next, I applied adhesive to the flaps on the box lid. Because the lid is small, I only needed a little adhesive on each flap.

Because the box bottom is quite a bit larger, I applied adhesive along the three sides that weren’t attached to the box. Once the adhesive was in place, I made sure to line up the folded edge of the flap with the adjacent side of the box to get as close to a 90° angle as possible.

After the box top and bottom were assembled, I placed the K-Cup insert into the box bottom.

There is no need to glue it into place.

I added my K-Cups and then decided to embellish the lid a bit.

I went around the bottom part of the label with a glue pen and then applied glitter. Static electricity caused glitter to stick to the whole label and not just where I had glue, so I let the glue dry for a little bit. Then I used a cheap makeup brush to brush away the loose glitter.

I recommend doing this step over a trash can or sink! As my daughter said yesterday, “Mom, sparkles are *forever*!”

I added some pleated ribbon to the edge of the box lid, added a rhinestone decal to the top, and layered a fabric flower under the label. I stamped the “thanks a latte” sentiment and little coffee cup on the rounded rectangle label top, then added it to the bottom black label with 3-D foam adhesive for some additional dimension.

And here it is in all its glory!

I love how it turned out and I can’t wait to see what the recipient thinks of it! I’d love to see what you do with this box template – be sure to come back and leave a comment with a link so we can check it out!

I love good coffee, but not the Keurig stuff at all. I think the little box and holders would be perfect for my mini-muffins or cup-cakes, though, which make nice gifts for the non-coffee lovers, the tea drinkers and so many others. I’d make a tea-bag dispenser and mini applesauce muffins for a friend in the hospital, knowing what patients have to endure for food and beverages there.
