Fun is Popping up Everywhere {Homecoming Parade Float}

August 29, 2012 | Filed under: Articles and tagged with: Do it Yourself, Girl Boy Girl Designs, home decor, templates

Hi everyone! Rebecca (ReboScraps) here to share with you the project I made for the big Homecoming Parade!

When I saw the Scallop Edge Popcorn Box [hybrid template] by Girl Boy Girl Designs, I immediately had this idea to create a project that looked like elements and pieces were “popping” out of the popcorn box. I paired that with one of my favorite former Digi Chicks, Pixel Gypsy, for this project. I knew immediately I would use her Share the Magic and More Magic page kits. If you are a Disney fan (like me!), these are great kits for your magical memories, but the bright primary colors in these kits have made them favorites I have used again and again.

Before I get too far, here’s a supply list of what I used for this project.

Digi Supplies:

  • Scallop Edge Popcorn Box [hybrid template] by Girl Boy Girl Designs
  • Share the Magic Page Kit by Pixel Gypsy
  • More MagicPage Kit by Pixel Gypsy

Non-Digi Supplies:

  • 1″ circle punch
  • 1/16″ hole punch
  • Tombow Mono Multi Liquid glue
  • Scissors
  • Yellow Sizzle Pack
  • Floral Foam
  • 1.5mm Black Wire
  • Side-cutter Pliers
  • Round Nose Pliers

First, I used the template and digi kits to make my design. The template is sized for a letter size piece of paper, but I knew I wanted my parade float to be bigger, so I resized the template, printing half of it twice, on two letter sheets. Because the scallop edge on the finished project folds down, I wanted it to have a contrasting paper, so I also made an extra copy of that part of the template an printed it with a second printed paper. On the second sheet, I added paper shapes and kit elements to print to use on my project.

After printing, I begin cutting out the shapes. Below, you can see the back side of the main popcorn box, which shows the contrasting box edge. Below that, you can see the front side of the box.

Once the scallops were glued on, I assembled the box and glued the bottom together.

Next, I shaped some floral foam to fit in the box. This will hold the “popping” shapes. Below is the shaped foam, and then shown inserted in the popcorn box.

Now, for the elements. I used wire to attach each element. For some elements, I punched a 1/16″ hole in the element, and then made a hanger for the element by shaping the wire with round nose pliers, as shown in the next picture. For other elements, I simply glued the wire to the back of the element.

Almost done! I placed each element down in the floral foam, much like arranging flowers. I used Sizzle Pack in yellow to cover the floral foam. This packing material is really fun because the crinkled shape of the paper strips suggest movement and I knew it was the right finishing touch for this piece. As I was stuffing the Sizzle Pack in the box, a few bits got stuck to the glue on the back of the elements, and I ended up liking it!

Last but not least, one more finishing touch! I used the round alpha letters to make “wheels” for the parade float – and it’s ready to go! Welcome home, Pixel Gypsy!
