Brighten up your Desk

April 8, 2012 | Filed under: Articles, Inspiration and tagged with: cards, Christmas Gifts, Desktop Calendars, digichick collabs, Do it Yourself, gift, home decor, recycling, repurpose

Does your desk or workspace need a little cheering up? It’s never easy to make your desk look cheery so I would like to share a project that is not only pretty but functional too!  My desk calendar is so easy to complete and would make a fabulous gift or Mother’s day present.

The calendar base consists of a simple triangle of card (mine is made from an old cereal box which is the perfect weight).  I opened the box trimmed the cardboard to measure 11″x13″.  I used the existing score lines from  the side of my packet as the base of my triangle adding a further score line at one edge so it forms a return to stick the triangle together. So my card is scored at 1/2″, 5 1/2″, 8″.  Fold at each of these lines to create your triangle.

Print your patterned papers onto good quality, heavy weight cardstock.  My favourite is Epson Archival Matte Paper which gives super-saturated colour and is a perfect weight.  I doubled up my patterns, printing one pattern on the front and another on the reverse. I used a selection of papers and elements from Daily Details and Hop Skip Jump.

I trimmed my pages to 4 3/4″ x 4 1/2″.  I created 12 pages – one for each month so I could put photos on the reverse side.  That way you can view the calendar from the back and see a family photo.

Once the pages have been decorated, you’ll need to bind the calendar together.  I used a Bind-it-All but small book rings would make a suitable alternative.  My top tip for punching your pages – secure the pages together with a bulldog clip while punching to stop them moving around.

Decorate the calendar base and stick together to form a triangle as shown.  Then punch holes in the base to align with your pages and bind all together!

I’m really proud of my calendar – it now takes pride of place on my desk at work.  You can print additional calendar pages so that it can be used year after year.

I hope you will make a calendar too.  Check out the latest kits in the store.  Thanks for popping in.
