The Digi Nails – A Hybrid Manicure

September 15, 2011 | Filed under: Articles and tagged with: Do it Yourself, fingernail designs, hybrid manicure, Mari Koegelenberg

I’ve been seeing lots of outrageous nail art lately on pinterest.   One hot new product that’s really caught my eye is adhesive nail polish strips.  I love the funky designs and bold colors with these products, but they’re usually a little spendy for me.

I have a great alternative and I’m super-excited to share with you a really fun, new way to use digital scrapbooking supplies!  We are going to give ourselves a little hybrid manicure.

To begin with, you will need the following:

  • light color nail polish (white, light pink, cream, pale green, light turquoise, you get the idea….)
  • rubbing alcohol
  • small cup (I used a medicine cup.)
  • digital supplies (laser print or copy)
  • nail polish topcoat

1) Before getting started, quickly measure your fingernails.  This doesn’t need to be precise, but it’s nice to have a general idea.

2) Open a new Photoshop document and create for yourself 10-15 boxes that are a little larger than your nails.  My boxes were sized at 3/4 inch square.  (In a perfect world, you’ll just need the 10, but make a couple extra just in case.)

3) Find some great papers that you’d like to have on your nails.  I chose a rainbow striped paper from Mari Koegelenberg’s Hello Sunshine kit.

You will likely want to reduce the scale of your paper so that the design will better fit your nails.  Clip your papers to the boxes that you created.

4) Print your page.  (I have only tried this project with a laser print and I do not know if it will work with an ink-jet copy.)  Cut out all squares and set aside.

5) Paint your nails with your light colored nail polish.  You’ll likely need a couple coats.  You want to have a nice opaque canvas.  Let nails dry thoroughly.

6) Pour your alcohol into the small cup.  It should be deep enough that it can cover your finger.

7) Working with one nail at a time:  Dip your finger into the alcohol for 3-5 seconds.  It doesn’t take long; you just want to completely wet the nail.  Immediately press one of the paper squares onto your nail, image side down.  Do not move the paper around.  You can press so that it’s completely adhered.  Leave on for approximately 30 seconds and lift to remove.  If you notice that some paper fibers have been left behind, just gently rub them away with a damp finger.

8) Repeat for all of your fingers :)

9) Paint a topcoat on your nails to protect.  I used a glittery nail polish as my topcoat.

10)  Enjoy your fancy new nails!

A few thoughts:

  • This is a super-easy project, but it did take me a couple times to get it just right.  Be prepared for that.  You may have to practice a time or two to get the hang of it.
  • After doing this several times, I found that I had better results with simpler designs.  My stripes (in this tutorial) turned out better than a red damask pattern that I tried.  The transfer isn’t going to be 100% perfect every time, and the stripes (with a white background) were more forgiving.
  • You might notice that my stripes are all going the same way except for on my ring finger.  That was um, intentional.  Yeah.  Cause my ring finger is special ;)   If none of your digits are more special than the others, you might make certain that your pattern is going the same way on all your nails.
  • Decals are also really great!  My daughter was so excited about having hearts & flowers on her nails.  Decals are actually much easier than an all-over pattern and can be used for so many different themes and occasions!  You follow the same instructions, just decrease the size of any element you plan on using to fit your nails.

Here I used a sticker from Mari’s kit as an accent on my thumb nail:

Does it last, you ask?  Absolutely!  I found that my manicure lasted about a week and I didn’t have any trouble with my images fading.

Have fun!!

UPDATE (February 11, 2012):

I am blown away by the response to this tutorial!  Thank you for the many wonderful compliments!  It’s exciting to see so many people coming over to our little corner of the internet!   If you’re new to The Hybrid Chick, welcome!  We are digital scrapbooking site.  We use digital supplies, print them out, then work our magic.  In this tutorial, I am using a LASER PRINT of a DIGITAL scrapbook paper.

As I stated in the tutorial, it took me a bit to nail this (pun intended).  I had to try several times before I got the hang of it.  Saturating the entire paper and pressing firmly were the keys for me.  And some paper fibers did remain, but those were easily removed.

A word about papers:

  • This tutorial uses a laser print (printed from my HP Color Laserjet 3550).  You could also use a laser copy.
  • Inkjet prints are not recommended as the printing technology is different.  Ink bleeds into the paper whereas with a laser copy/print, the image “sits” on top of the paper making it easier to transfer.  Some readers have had positive results with ink jet, but the majority have not.
  • “Real” scrapbook paper (i.e. patterned paper you bought from the store) – again, not recommended.  One reader had positive results with this, but I have personally not tried it.
  • One reader had luck with tracing paper.  (I’m assuming that she used a laser printer to print onto tracing paper.)

Some feedback from readers:

  • Rebecka R. had success with this tutorial and shared her method:  What ended up working was wetting the paper with the alcohol, pressing it onto the nail, applying quite a lot of pressure, and making sure to apply pressure especially to the ends of my nail (because they’re long) and the sides of the nail. I peeled it back after the alcohol dried, just enough to see if the entire thing transferred, if not, I laid it back down and wet the back of the paper with alcohol (since it just absorbs, the front gets wet too) and I just applied pressure again, especially to the places that hadn’t transferred :) . It took a while, but now it’s REALLY easy, and they turned out GREAT.
  • Leah also wrote about her success:  Here’s what I did:1. cut out the squares; 2. paint nails with white; 3. here’s where i did it differently, get the squares wet with water; 4. place on the nail; 5. dunk whole finger tip with the paper in rubbing alcohol; 6. press it on for 7-10 seconds; 7. Done!    There will be little pieces of paper left behind but they peel off after your nails dry completely. It took a few times of trial and error to get it to come out right but I am pretty much obsessed now. I used laser jet print and standard paper. But get this- I just tried it with a plain old piece of scrapbook paper and that worked too!

Hope that helps a bit!  Thanks so much for visiting us & happy crafting!!

I tried this on my inkjet last night and it didn’t work. :(

I actually tried it a few times, and even a few different ways. Laser must be the answer!

Ok so I am confused. Why do you need the printer? Can’t you just say cut out the scrapbook paper with a Silhouette machine and then trasfer them right from the scrapbook paper? I am lost as where the printer comes into play. Did you have to scan the scrapbook paper? I am sorry I really want to try this but I think I missed something?

Hey guys! I just spent THREE hours figuring this out… but I FINALLY got it, and I LOVE them. I had to do it differently for it to work though. I painted my nails silver, and printed out just basic navy stripes (I thought I’d start simple). I stared by dipping my nails in alcohol and sticking the paper on… but the transfer just didn’t work too well for me. What ended up working was wetting the paper with the alcohol, pressing it onto the nail, applying quite a lot of pressure, and making sure to apply pressure especially to the ends of my nail (because they’re long) and the sides of the nail. Next time… I’m doing SNOWFLAKES! :)

    Hope this helps ladies!

I wasn’t ablew to get this to work with scrapbook paper but I was able to get this to work with newspaper. I LOVED it with the newspaper but it is not at all perfect. I had a lot better luck when the nail was slightly tacky (which is hard b/c it can’t be so wet to pull the paint up but not so drey it won’t pull the image from the paper) and I dipped the tacky nail in alcohol then put the paper on. It works, I was able to get a full word on my thumb (backwards, of course). It was def. something I will do again but only with the newspaper. Good Luck!

To the person that was asking why the printer… I think she is using digital scrapbook paper… Like to make a digital scrapbook…. Maybe? I don’t have a printer at all let alone a digital one, so I can’t try this even though I really wanted to. I have regular scrapbook paper…I wonder if it would work?

  20. Kaci says:
    December 16, 2011 at 6:56 pm

I got it to work. I had to soak my paper in the alcohol until it was saturated and see through. Then I pressed it on my painted nail and it worked almost instantly. I didn’t need to let it dry. Just give it a gentle rub and it transfers nicely.

Just so no one else wastes any . . . vodka does not work, lol. I can’t find my rubbing alcohol and thought I’d give the vodka a go since it’s just taking up space (I prefer rum, when I drink, lol). I didn’t expect it to work, but it was worth a try and had us laughing at the thought of being able to say we had vodka infused nails! I’ll just have to wait until tomorrow.

I’ve also tried this in many different ways. Tracing paper, laser copies, regular printouts from our inkjet, soaking the paper in advance. I’ve read through the comments multiple times and tried everything suggested. I emailed the author via the blog and no response. I’ll let go of my fantasizing about doing these beautiful nails at home.

Inkjet will not work. The difference between Injet and Laser is that an Injet printer ‘injects’ the ink into the paper and a laser printer puts the ink on top of the paper. Since you are transfering the ink off of the paper, Inkjet will not work as well, if at all. I hope this helps eveyone wondering :)

Hi greengrassgirl – both the author and I have tried to email you several times but hotmail keeps rejecting our emails stating that the email you use is not a valid account. as you can see from the above posts from other people who have posted, it DOES work – some people have had to do things a little differently to get it to work and some just can’t get it to work. it is very much a trial and error process.

@ wildblueeyez, I got an email from Christina (not sure why the others were filtered). Thanks for the response. I thought it was fake because it seemed like so many people were asking questions and no one from the blog had responded to anyone’s frustrations or questions or followed up on the comments for other readers to get help. Anyway, thanks for getting back to me. I hope other people can figure this out because it really is such a cool idea. Too bad it didn’t work for me.

So, like many of you, I had lots of problems with this. But I got it to work! Here’s what I did:
    1. cut out the squares
    2. paint nails with white
    3. here’s where i did it differently, get the squares wet with water
    4. place on the nail
    5. dunk whole finger tip with the paper in rubbing alcohol
    6. press it on for 7-10 seconds

I have read through a lot of these comments and I am confused about the paper…

why do you need a printer & scrapbook paper? Seems like you should need one or the other so I am confused…?

  32. Laura says:
    February 4, 2012 at 9:27 pm

In response to Kayla, I was confused too at first. What she meant is she has a scrapbooking program on her computer that allowed her to print off different patterns onto the paper. I tried this and had a lot of problems I thought maybe my paper was too this because the paper wasn’t becoming fully saturated. It worked when I transferred the design onto another piece of paper, but that was all I manged. I finally realized I have the wrong type of printer. Oh well, I’ll try again another time with scrapbook paper and magazine cutouts. Brilliant idea nonetheless!!!!

Kayla, if you take a look around our blog, you’ll see that we are a digital scrapbooking site. That’s why you would need a printer, as well as your favorite digital paper to print out. That’s what our team does here–they turn digital supplies into real world items.

This post as become rather popular on sites like Pinterest and StumbleUpon, so we apologize if you are coming in for the first time from another site and you feel confused about what we’re all about. :)

this reminds me…. and I’m giving away my age here… of when we use to get fake tattoos in cracker jacks and Fruit Stripe gum. The wrappers of the gum you did exactly like this to put the tat on your skin and i think the ones in Cracker Jacks too but i can’t remember. Just like Leah in the Feb followup said I too would pull up a bit and repress it down if it wasn’t done all the way. Somebody may have already said this i’m not sure I didn’t read all the posts as there are several but i did read the whole article about the nails. I used it with my lil cousin that I keep and we had a BLAST doing her “fancy manicure”! TY for the tip!

Hey, I didn’t get this to work AT ALL :( D:
I’ve used this method before with just text but it’s not working… any help? I have an ink jet printer? If that sounds right? But it didn’t work, is it a postive response if you use a layser printer? 100% positive?

  37. Sarah says:
    February 26, 2012 at 2:34 pm

It sounds great! I would love to try this but I don’t have a laser printer. I did find something I like….Newspaper nails…you just cut out squares (same as above) of an old newspaper& use the same method you used. But the *colors* doesn’t transfer when using the newspaper, just the black transfers.

I tried this and had a hard time. They turned out okay in the end but not great. I had multicolored stars. I used 70% rubbing alcohol and what worked best for me is waiting til my nails were really really dry. Then I soaked all of my little pieces of patterned paper in the rubbing alcohol for probably 5-10 minutes (til they were VERY saturated), and then I firmly pressed them down on my nails for awhile. I needed to let the pattern dry a bit before doing a topcoat, because I smeared a few designs a little bit. I will definitely need more practice, but eventually I think I’ll get the hang of it! It’s inexpensive, so why not? :)

I just tried this on my toes using leopard print with our inkjet… And it took 3 tries but I nailed it! I put it in water and put it on my toes and the poured a little bit of rubbing alcohol pressed firmly for 10-15 sec and gently peeled it off! They look so sassy and lovely like I got them done professionally! So glad I found your blog on pinterest!!!

The problems people are having sound very similar to the issues people have when trying to transfer images to clay. Toner works way better than ink, so if you only have an ink jet you can try printing out your images, taking them to a copy shop, and making a color copy. If your going to do this you might want to use as much of the paper as possible with pattern, so you can get your money’s worth.

Hey so maybe I am out of the circle, but what is the difference between laser jet and ink jet? is it a whole different copy machine or just a different kind of ink? ….. and then what if i don’t have photoshop, will it still work? ….. AND do you just print it on “regular” paper or does it have to be an extra thin kind, etc?

Hi! I tried this with a color laser printer and it did not work very well; sometimes the image would seem to come off onto my nail, but not very well and it didn’t look very good at all. I tried it the way you said and also the way another commenter said, soaking the paper in water first and whatnot. I love the idea and wish it would work!

I also tried regular scrapbooking paper and the image didn’t come off onto my nail but the color did a little bit, just duller. So, I’m wodnering why it won’t work! I wish it did, it would be a ton of fun! I am so sad right now! :(

Why do you need the printer? Why can’t you just cut the squares of patterned paper?
