Hydrangea Vase
My hubby and I are getting ready to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. I remember those days so well, getting ready for our wedding. I remember how excited I was about my flowers. I didn’t care what the bouquets looked like as long as they had hydrangeas in them. That was going to be my something blue in my bouquet.
I’ve always had a huge love for big puffy flowers and my love for hydrangeas has never gone away. As we started planning our landscaping around our house, I even said that I didn’t care what we had in our gardens as long as I had some hydrangeas. I love all the many varieties too. I think I would even have a hard time deciding which ones I wanted in my yard… can I just have one of each? LOL
So, I’ve decided to make a little centerpiece for our dining room table. It’s not a huge table so I thought a little vase would be perfect.
I love the new Chick Fix goodies here at The Digichick and thought the colors were so perfect for this project. There are tons of texture to the papers so I had fun using overlays and changing up the blending mode in PSE to make all sorts of fun texture for them.
Supplies:
- Colored Grunge {one} by Joyful Heart Designs
- Bordering On Awesome! {colors one} by Joyful Heart Designs
- Sunwashed Woodgrain Mats by Sarah Jones
- Tapered Box Template Set by Kelleigh Ratzlaff
- Tag #1 Template and Cutting Files by Stacy Molter
- 2 full sheets of matte presentation paper printed on both sides for the flower petals
- Martha Stewart Hydrangea punch
- red line tape
- push pins
- 3in Styrofoam ball
- bamboo skewer
- scoring board
The first thing I did was open the .psd file of Kelleigh’s template. I wanted to use the Sarah’s woodgrain overlays so I rotated the overlay so that the grain would follow the template. I turned down the opacity to 30% so you could still see the pattern from the paper. I merged all the visible layers together and moved it to the bottom of the 8.5×11 canvas.
I then took Stacy’s leaves and brought them over to the canvas and duplicated them a few times and clipped the green paper to them. I then used the blue paper as the background and printed this all out.
I printed 2 double sided papers for punching the petals out… on one of them I added Stacy’s butterfly and clipped the orange and added the bordering on awesome overlays. One each side of the papers I added some of the overlays so all of the petals will be a bit different. I then cut everything out and punched out the petals. I scored the template and scrunched up all the petals.
I then put together the tapered box according to Kelleigh’s instructions and poked a hole in the top to fit the skewer through. I closed the box and slid the skewer through.
Using one of the pins, I started a hole on the leaves then pushed them down the skewers, spreading them out.
Next, I used a bread knife to cut the bottom of the styrofoam ball to make it lay flat.
Using the pins, I put all the petals on it smooshing them up more as I went along… you’ll really want to fill it up and do lots of smooshing.
After filling the ball with petals, I placed the butterfly on the front using some adhesive.
I really love how this turned out and think I’ll be making some more. If you don’t have the hydrangea punch, you can totally use the four petal flower in The Cutting File’s Paper Templates Set 1 instead.
I can’t wait to make a couple more to add to my dining room table. If you make this project, we’d love to see it. Leave us a link to your project and we’ll leave you some gallery love.
