Paper Heart Wreath

January 31, 2011 | Filed under: Articles and tagged with: Do it Yourself, hearts, home decor, Quirky Twerp, Valentine's Day, wall hanging, wreath

Today is the last day of January and I can’t believe how fast this month has gone. My family had so much going on that the month totally went by too fast. That means that Valentine’s day is coming quickly, it’s only a couple weeks away. Since it’s coming up so quickly I thought I would share a really quick and simple project with you to hang from your front door.

I always like to have a wreath hanging from my front door that goes with the season and thought this would be perfect. The best part is you don’t really need many supplies either. You just need some double-sided printed paper, adhesive and ribbon. This was the perfect project to do with my daughter while the boys were taking their nap, and we had it all picked up and the table clean by the time they woke up. It’s now hanging from our front door and my daughter is so proud of it knowing that she took part in decorating the house for Valentine’s day.

Supplies:

  • kit I used is Confectionerie Paper Pack by Quirky Twerp
  • Epson Premium Matte Photo Paper
  • Mini Glue Dots
  • Fiskars Paper Trimmer
  • coordinating ribbon

First, I printed out the papers; borderless and on both sides of the photo paper. Then you’ll need to cut them into 2 inch by 11 inch strips and fold them in half. I used 12 strips which makes it an oval shape. If you’re looking for a rounder shape then I would do 8 strips instead of 12.

Using the mini glue dots, I put 3 dots on the edge of one of the strips and them joined the other end together to form a heart shape. I used glue dots but you can really use any kind of strong adhesive, the glue dots were just what I had on hand.

Continue to make these hearts until you’ve made your desired number. Next you will want to attach the hearts together. I used the mini glue dots only on the edges of the heart. I wanted to leave a little space between the adhesive and you’ll see why in a minute. Attach them all together to form your circle or oval.

Once you’ve completed your circle or oval of hearts, you’ll want to thread your ribbon in between two hearts and tie a knot. I left four hearts between where I thread the other end of the ribbon.

When you have the ribbon the your desired length, tie a knot there too. For the circle with eight hearts, I’d probably have three hearts instead of four in between the ends of the ribbon. This is why I used glue dots, to leave space between the hearts for the ribbon to thread through. If you don’t have glue dots and you’re using another kind of adhesive you just have to plan the ribbon placement ahead of time and insert the ribbon while gluing the hearts together.

Lastly, trim your ribbon ends and hang your wreath.

Hope you have a wonderful day! If you decide to make one, we’d love to see your finished wreath.

Best wishes!
Heather aka heathergw

I have made one 12 heart wreath, one 8 heart wreath and two tiny 8 heart wreaths…I used every scrap of the paper. Incidentally, I used my laser printer which won’t do borderless but I trimmed off the white edges with the guillotine! I really love this design and your paper patterns are amazing…I’m off to look for more! What a happy afternoon I’m having, thank you. My husband has been away working and is back tonight to house full of hearts! haha!!

Did you use the exact paper referenced even though it is not a true double sided photo paper? Or should I use double sided photo paper?

  23. Heather Greenwood says:

Kristen… I did use double sided matte photo paper for printing the papers on both sides.

    Cute idea Heather!

Totally cute idea! I was inspired to make mine today! My glue dots however were not strong enough :( so the wreath “un-hearted” itself within 5 minutes. However, I had my rubber cement handy and I have it bobby pinned up right now drying. I hope it turns out half as cute as yours!

  25. Kristen says:

Did you have to first scan in your colorful papers and then print them on the double sided photo paper? I assume you have to use the photo paper to be able to withstand weather/damp/cold, etc. Thanks for your comment/response.

Love this idea but once again makes me realize I need a new printer so I can print my own paper.
So this brings up a question. Can you share what printer model you use that provides such great printing.

Also I thought this might be great printed on waterproof vinyl (like the stuff you use for waterbottle labels). Wonder if you can print on both sides of vinyl? Just a thought for making this project outdoor safe.

    Thanks for your response

This was a quick, easy and family friendly project. We were snowed in and needed some craft projects so I pulled this off my to-do Pinterest Board. Only problem I had was the wreath sagging into an oval shape – so I put some extra zots on the door and kind of pressed a few hearts into them to improve the shape. Kids age 5 and 7 had no trouble makign the hearts though I folded the pieces first.
