Vintage Halloween Banner

October 20, 2010 | Filed under: Articles and tagged with: Banner, Halloween, Quirky Twerp, The Cutting Files, vintage

I love Halloween, the dressing up, the decorations and all the treats of course! I decided to add a vintage touch to the decorations this year by making a SPOOKY banner using some of the gorgeous papers and elements from the All Hallows’ Eve Scrapbook Pack by Quirky Twerp. There are some fabulous vintage Halloween images in this kit just perfect for a vintage themed Halloween celebration! I used Banners Set 1 from The Cutting Files for the banner shapes.

I prettied things up a bit with some easy to make Yo-Yo flowers, ribbon, glitter and little paper flowers. I went with the word SPOOKY for my banner using the letters from the kit but you could pick whatever you like, BOO, TRICK OR TREAT, HAPPY HALLOWEEN, SCARY…. depending on how much time you have!

A few things you will need, Banner Set 1 from The Cutting Files, a selection of printed papers from the All Hallows’ Eve Scrapbook Pack by Quirky Twerp, letters printed onto light card to make up your word, some images printed on light card, (I used the brad images and butterfly from the elements in the kit), hole punch, ribbon, glitter, foam pads, black fabric, needle and thread, buttons and basic tools (scissors, pencil etc.) Optional extras sewing machine, paper flowers, black tulle.

Using your chosen banner shape from the set cut out enough triangles from the printed papers for your banner, I used ten (six for the letters and four for the images.) I don’t have a cutting machine (just me and a scissors!!) so I traced the shape onto the back of the printed paper and cut out, if you’re short on time you could use the plain triangle shape to speed things up!

I printed the images and letters onto light card and cut out. I did use a craft knife for the centers of some of the letters.

I added a little stitching detail to the triangles but this is optional, you could add some faux stitching with a white gel pen. Using the hole punch, punch two holes at the top of each triangle.

I used sticky foam pads to stick on the individual letters. They add a bit of dimension to the banner.

I added a few extra embellishments, these are optional, I had plain pink paper roses that I painted with some orange shimmer paint, I painted some of the roses with black acrylic paint and dipped into some fine black glitter while the paint was still wet. I brushed a little PVA on to the centers of the butterflies and sprinkled with black glitter. I made some bows from black organza ribbon and orange seam binding.

I added these extra embellishments to the four triangles with the images, I made two the same on each side at the end to balance the look of the banner.

To hang your banner, use some black ribbon, thread through the holes punched in each triangle.

To make the simple Yo-Yo flowers cut out a circle of black fabric approximately 10cm in diameter. I added a small circle of tulle on top of mine but that’s optional.

Do a simple running/tacking stitch around the outside of the circle with a needle and thread, all the way around.

Once you get to the end, pull the thread and the circle will gather and close. Sew a few stitches in the centre to secure. Add a little circle of tulle on top and sew on a button.

I made six of these to add to the ends of the banner. I sewed them directly on to the ribbon on the banner. I also added a few little black bows in between the letters on the ribbon. Have a SPOOKY Halloween!! : )
