First Time Parents Advice Book

June 18, 2009 | Filed under: Articles and tagged with: chipboard, Mira Designs, mod podge

Hope you’re all enjoying all the Baby Shower ideas… I know we’re having a blast putting them together for you.

I wanted to come up with a project that could either be used as a game or as a gift that a first time parent could keep, enjoy and hopefully reference every once in a while. So I’ve put together a First Time Parents Advice book. Here’s a photo of it all wrapped up with a band.

Here’s a photo of it without the band.

The idea behind the book is for either guests at a baby shower to write suggestions on each topic or if you’re giving it as a gift, then you would just write those in for the parents your gifting it to.

I first put the pages together using Mira Desings’ Baby Days Kit and Wordz (Baby) by Dawn Inskip. I designed it so that book pages fit on one page and could print two pages at once. The other materials I used are shown below (I didn’t use every single piece shown here but wanted to give you an idea of wha you could embellish your book with:

materials

In addition to the all this (chipboard album and frame, halfback pearls, ribbon, flowers, and buttons), you’ll need Mod Podge, Brayer, Ink, Sponge, Double-sided tape, Crop-A-Dile and some glue dots. I began by sponging the frame with some green ink.

frame

Once dry I decorated it with flowers and buttons and put it aside to work on the pages. I added Mod Podge to each chipboard page and adhered the printed pages to them.

To ensure that I get rid of any air bubbles and have the paper adhere correctly to the chipboard, I like to use a brayer and just go back and forth across my project.

Once all the pages were dried, I used an exacto knife to cut out the tabs and then used the Crop-a-Dile to punch holes on the opposite sides of each page. Once the holes where punched, I adhered the pages with ribbon as shown here:

Once all together, the book can be displayed. Here’s one side.

Here’s the other side.

The band I used to hold the book together is just a couple of flowers with a ribbon through it.

I was just told (on father’s day) that my son and his wife are expecting their first (after trying for over two years!) If I don’t win this, I will be making one! Whst a grand idea — good for a gramma to give and for others to fill in – especially since I am the Mother-in-law!!!
