Make your Own Nightlight

Let’s get this party started! Hey everyone! LuAnn here starting things off on the Hybrid Chick! I’m a new kid on the block around here but not new to the whole Hybrid scene. I’m not your typical Hybrid artist – I like to dabble in projects that are on the unique side. I’m more of a trash to treasure artist. There’s nothing like taking an inexpensive item and transforming it into a beautiful handcrafted gift! I have a very simple yet fun project for you today!

I picked up a simple nightlight from my local dollar store. I purchased one that had a flat plastic circular piece in front of the light. I used nail polish remover to remove the design that was on the purchased night light.

Next I measured the circular piece so that I could design my new front for my nightlight. It’s circumference measured 3 1/2″. Next I opened my Photoshop Elements. To create my nightlight, I used Starry Night by Megan Fisher.

On a new blank canvas, I used the Elliptical Marquee tool to draw a 3 1/2″ circle.

I added a new layer and began designing the front of my nightlight. Designing this is the same as designing a layout, except that the area you are working with is round.

Once I was satisfied with my design, I printed my round layout on computer paper using my printer’s best printing options. I always let my projects sit for an hour or two before attempting to use mod podge.

Next, I applied a very thin layer of mod podge to the front surface of the nightlight and positioned my new front on the plastic piece. I allowed this to dry for about 2 hours before applying a very thin top coat of mod podge to seal my nightlight.

Once my new nightlight was dry, I popped the flat piece back onto my nightlight, plugged it in and admired my handiwork!

Ah…nail polish remover! I’ve always wanted to do this, but all of those dollar store night lights had pictures on them. Hmm, I wonder if Goo Gone would work as well. Very cute! Have to try this:)

Can anybody give me a name of a supplier of night lights? What I need is the frame that I can slip my own photos into. I want to purchase small quantity. I’ll appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks
